| On a wooded dirt road a few miles from Lake Champlain, you’ll find an old brick farm house built by Captain Doolittle in 1766. The Hammond family (John, Bay, Nick and Hilary) have lovingly restored and enjoyed the Doolittle house and its farm for the past 6 years. John is a builder specializing in custom home building and Bay runs the farm. Nick is home with his Spotted Draft horses, Pete and Paul. Hilary spends part of the year studying Animal Science and her summers working on the farm and teaching riding lessons.
On the farm, Bay raises pastured organic chickens and eggs, makes fabulous broth for the soup lovers in our area, and manages about 30 Border Leicester and Border Leicester-cross sheep. The contented flock produces very lustrous, long-staple wool for our yarn. Bay and Marj Moureau, a knitting enthusiast who helps Bay with the yarn, drive the fleece to the Green Mountain Spinnery in Putney, Vermont to have it custom spun in its natural color. This year we decided to blend it with very soft, fine wool and have it spun into a versatile, 2-ply worsted weight yarn. The result was a rich, soft yarn with wonderful elasticity! We dye the yarn in our homes in small batches producing lovely shades and color blends and sell it locally at the Farmers’ Market along with the other products from the farm. We are now making it available through the internet as the demand for authentic wool yarns with historic characteristics increases.
